Dear national leaders and delegates to the upcoming United Nations climate change conference (COP27),

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) represents 1,400 member organizations and experts working on nature conservation and sustainable development. Drawing on our global network, we call on you to take urgent and transformative action at COP27 to address the interlinked crises of climate change and biodiversity loss.

The scientific evidence on climate change is unequivocal. Global average temperatures have already risen by 1.1°C compared to pre-industrial levels, with devastating impacts felt around the world. Extreme weather events, sea level rise, droughts, and wildfires are becoming more frequent and intense. Without rapid and deep emissions cuts, we are headed towards a 2.7°C temperature rise by the end of this century, which would be catastrophic for people and nature.

The world's ecosystems are also in crisis. A million species are at risk of extinction, largely due to human activities that have degraded and destroyed natural habitats. Healthy, biodiverse ecosystems are essential to regulate the climate, provide food and water security, and support human wellbeing. However, these life-support systems are being undermined by human-caused climate change, pollution, overexploitation, and land-use change.

To address these interlinked crises, we call for the following actions at COP27:

1) Raise climate ambition: Commit to more ambitious nationally determined contributions (NDCs) to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, in line with the Paris Agreement. This requires at least 45% reductions in global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

2) Protect and restore nature: Integrate ambitious nature-based solutions into updated NDCs and long-term strategies, including large-scale ecosystem restoration, sustainable land and ocean management, and protection of carbon-rich ecosystems like forests, wetlands, and peatlands.

3) Mobilize finance: Significantly increase public and private finance to support climate action and biodiversity conservation, in line with the pledge to mobilize $100 billion per year for climate action. Ensure these funds are equitably accessed, especially by developing countries and Indigenous Peoples.

4) Promote just transitions: Ensure that the transition to a low-carbon, nature-positive future is fair and inclusive, with support for workers, communities, and countries affected by the shift away from fossil fuels.

5) Strengthen collaboration: Enhance cooperation between the climate and biodiversity agendas, as well as with other relevant processes like the Sustainable Development Goals and the Convention on Biological Diversity.

The next decade is critical for the future of our planet. We must act with urgency and ambition to address the interconnected crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. The decisions made at COP27 will have far-reaching consequences. We call on you to seize this moment and take the necessary actions to protect people, planet, and prosperity.

Sincerely, The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)
